ITO vs. Anti-Fog Coating: Which is Right for Your Freezer?
Release time:2026-05-09

In the field of cold chain storage and commercial display, fogging and frosting on freezer glass have always been common industry pain points. Affected by temperature differences and air humidity, water mist easily condenses on the surface of cabinet glass, blocking sightlines and impairing display effects. Meanwhile, long-term condensation will accelerate glass aging and mold growth. At present, the mainstream anti-fog solutions in the market are divided into two categories: ITO conductive coating technology and conventional anti-fog coating technology. The two differ significantly in principles, performance and usage costs. Industry professionals deeply analyze the applicable scenarios of the two technologies based on low-temperature working conditions to provide selection references for merchants and users.

  I. Analysis of Technical Principles

The ITO coating is essentially an indium tin oxide transparent conductive film, which is attached to the glass interlayer through a vacuum coating process. It applies low-voltage current relying on conductive properties to evenly heat the glass surface and keep the glass temperature above the dew point, fundamentally inhibiting water vapor condensation and fogging with defrosting and anti-icing capabilities. The coating has excellent light transmittance with no obvious coating traces to the naked eye, without affecting the visual appearance of freezers.

Conventional anti-fog coatings are mostly nano hydrophilic functional coatings attached to the glass surface by spraying and curing processes. Containing hydrophilic groups, the coatings can adsorb water molecules in the air, making condensed water droplets spread evenly to form a transparent water film and preventing droplets from gathering into fog to achieve passive anti-fog effect without power supply.

II. Core Performance Comparison1. Anti-fog Stability

  1. Anti-fog Stability

The ITO coating adapts to working conditions with large high and low temperature fluctuations, with a temperature control accuracy of ±1℃. It can continuously and stably remove fog without repeated fogging even in harsh cold chain environments with high humidity and low temperature. Anti-fog coatings are greatly restricted by ambient temperature and humidity. In extremely low temperature or high humidity environments, the water film balance is easily broken, resulting in local fogging and water hanging marks.

  2. Service Life and Maintenance

The ITO coating is embedded inside the glass interlayer, resistant to friction and chemical cleaner damage with wear and corrosion resistance. Its service life matches the overall service life of freezers without special daily maintenance. The anti-fog coating adheres to the glass surface; long-term wiping and low-temperature oxidation will cause coating wear and shedding, leading to annual attenuation of anti-fog performance. It usually needs recoating maintenance within 1 to 3 years.

  3. Energy Consumption and Cost

The ITO coating requires power supply for operation with a conventional industry power consumption of about 15-20W/㎡, generating minor electricity fees during long-term use. Moreover, the early coating process is complex, resulting in high cabinet manufacturing costs. The anti-fog coating consumes no electricity with a simple spraying process and low processing cost. Its initial investment cost is much lower than that of ITO-coated freezers, with only subsequent maintenance and recoating fees required.

  III. Scenario Selection Suggestions

For supermarket commercial display freezers, low-temperature cold storage cabinets, and long-term uninterrupted cold chain equipment, the ITO coating solution is preferred. Such scenarios require high visualization and equipment stability with long service cycles. The ITO coating can avoid frequent fogging problems, reduce subsequent maintenance frequency, and meet high-standard commercial cold chain needs.

For small household freezers, short-term temporary storage cabinets, and low-frequency refrigeration equipment, ordinary anti-fog coatings offer higher cost performance. Such scenarios have small ambient temperature fluctuations and low usage intensity. Anti-fog coatings are sufficient to meet basic defogging requirements, effectively control procurement costs, and adapt to civil and lightweight usage scenarios.

  IV. Industry Summary

Industry technicians stated that there is no absolutely optimal anti-fog technology, and adaptability is the core of freezer coating selection. The ITO coating features high performance, high stability and long service life, suitable for harsh commercial working conditions; the anti-fog coating is characterized by low cost, zero energy consumption and easy processing, applicable to lightweight civil scenarios. Users can make comprehensive considerations combining usage environment, operation duration and budget cost to select a suitable anti-fog solution that balances usage experience and economic cost.
