ITO Electric Heated Glass vs. Anti-Fog Coating: In-depth Comparison and Selection Guide for Anti-Condensation Solutions for Commercial Freezers

Release time:2026-07-21

1. Technical Principles: Completely different physical and chemical pathways

To understand the differences between the two solutions, we first need to start with how they work. Although ITO electric heated glass and anti-fog coated glass both aim to solve the problem of "glass surface condensation," their technical approaches are completely different—one involves active physical intervention, the other passive chemical treatment.

ITO Electric Heated Glass: Eliminates condensation at the physical source

ITO, short for Indium Tin Oxide, is a transparent conductive oxide material made by mixing indium oxide and tin oxide in a specific ratio. At the microscopic level, ITO films have an extremely valuable property: they have extremely high transmittance in the visible light range (380 nanometers to 780 nanometers), reaching over 88%, making them almost invisible to the naked eye; At the same time, it also has good conductivity, with square resistance typically controlled between 10 and 30 ohms per square meter. This "transparent and conductive" characteristic makes ITO the preferred material in the field of transparent electrodes, widely used in LCD screens, touch screens, solar cells, and—as discussed here—electric heated anti-fog glass.

The main plating processes for ITO films are magnetron sputtering and chemical vapor deposition. After coating the glass substrate surface, technicians print silver paste busbars on both sides of the film layer and then connect it to an external power source via soldering wires. When low-voltage current flows evenly through the entire ITO film through the busbar, according to the Joule thermal effect (Q = I²Rt), the film generates uniform heat, keeping the glass surface temperature consistently above the ambient dew point temperature. When water vapor in the air contacts glass surfaces with temperatures above the dew point, it cannot condense into liquid water or solid frost—the phenomenon of condensation is completely eliminated at its physical source.

Typical parameters for commercial refrigerated ITO electric heating glass are as follows: The operating voltage is usually 12V, 24V, 110V, or 220V, and can be flexibly customized according to the voltage standards of the customer's region; Power density generally ranges from 1.5 watts to 3.0 watts per square decimeter; The glass surface temperature is usually controlled within a range of 3 to 8 degrees Celsius above the ambient dew point temperature, ensuring anti-fog effects while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption caused by overheating. From the perspective of glass structure, ITO coatings are usually encapsulated on the inner surface of insulating glass, protected by both the hollow and outer glass, shielded from external humid air, dust, and mechanical friction, thus ensuring a very long service life.

Anti-fog coated glass: a passive solution for chemical hydrophilicity

Anti-fog coatings use a completely different approach. It does not rely on electricity or generate heat, but achieves anti-fog by changing the chemical properties of the glass surface. Specifically, anti-fog coatings are superhydrophilic chemical materials—usually organic polymer or inorganic nano coatings—which, when applied to glass surfaces, can significantly reduce the contact angle of water droplets on the glass. On the surface of untreated ordinary glass, the contact angle of water droplets is usually between 30 and 70 degrees. After condensing, water vapor forms isolated small droplets, which diffuse off light, making it appear as a blurred mist to the naked eye. After anti-fog coating, the contact angle on the glass surface can be reduced to below 10 degrees or even close to 0 degrees, preventing water vapor from forming independent droplets but quickly spreading into a uniform, ultra-thin water film. From an optical perspective, this uniform water film refracts and reflects light in a regular pattern, so the glass still appears transparent and clear to the naked eye.

The advantages of anti-fog coatings lie in zero energy consumption, no need for circuit design, and simple structure, but they have a fundamental limitation: they cannot prevent water vapor from condensing; it only changes the form after condensation. In environments with extremely high humidity or very low temperature, as the thickness of the water film continues to increase, water ripples or localized atomization may still form, affecting vision. More crucially, anti-fog coatings are powerless against frost—when the ambient temperature drops below freezing, the water film on the coating surface freezes into an ice layer, causing the glass's permeability to drop sharply.

2. Performance: Actual results vary across different environments

After understanding both solutions at the theoretical level, we need to pay more attention to their performance in actual commercial environments. After all, a freezer may be deployed in a dry Nordic supermarket or installed in Southeast Asian convenience stores where humidity exceeds 80% year-round. Environmental differences can significantly affect the suitability of anti-fog solutions.

Low-temperature extreme environment testing

In freezer scenarios ranging from minus 18°C to minus 25°C, ITO electric heating glass demonstrates irreplaceable advantages. Because it uses active heating to keep the glass surface temperature above the dew point, even if the external temperature drops sharply or humidity surges, as long as the power supply is normal, the glass surface remains completely dry and mirror-clear. Experimental data show that under conditions of an ambient temperature of 25°C and relative humidity of 70%, a freezer at minus 22°C using ITO electric heated glass doors can recover from fogging to fully clear glass surfaces within just 3 to 5 minutes after powering on, and then remain fog-free thereafter.

In contrast, anti-fog coated glass performs poorly under the same low temperature conditions. Although the coating can spread water droplets into a water film, when the temperature inside the freezer is extremely low, the inner surface temperature of the glass is far below the ambient dew point, causing water vapor to condense rapidly, the water film thickens rapidly, and water ripples form. What's worse is that in commercial scenarios where doors are frequently opened, every time warm and humid air enters the cabinet, it brings new moisture loads. The anti-fog coating's hydrophilicity has an upper limit; once it exceeds the saturation threshold, its anti-fog effect begins to decline.

Tested by high humidity environments

In tropical or subtropical regions, such as parts of Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central America, and Africa, the humidity remains between 75% and 95% year-round. Under these conditions, anti-fog coatings face ongoing high-load challenges. Without active dehumidification or heating mechanisms, the coating can only passively withstand the constant invasion of moisture. Actual usage feedback shows that in commercial freezers in high-humidity regions, anti-fog coated glass may experience a significant decline in anti-fog performance after continuous use for 6 to 12 months, requiring recoating or glass replacement.

ITO electric heated glass performs very stably in high-humidity environments. Because heating is continuous, regardless of external humidity fluctuations, the glass surface remains above the dew point temperature, leaving no chance for moisture to condense. This proactive defense mechanism of "responding to changes with constancy" is precisely why ITO solutions are so favored in harsh environments.

Responsiveness and visual effects

In terms of response speed, ITO electric heated glass typically takes only 3 to 8 minutes from power to full clarity (depending on glass area, power density, and environmental conditions). For commercial freezers that need frequent door opening, this means the glass quickly returns to a clear state after each closing.

Anti-fog coated glass is consistently effective in most cases without waiting time. But as mentioned earlier, its effectiveness may diminish under extreme conditions. Visually, ITO glass can present a completely dry, water-free mirror finish; On the surface of anti-fog coated glass, there is always an extremely thin water film. Although it is highly transparent under normal viewing angles, a slight reflection of the water film may be seen when observed from the side.

3. Energy Consumption and Economics: The Game Between Short-Term Costs and Long-Term Returns

For refrigerated cabinet manufacturers and end retailers, besides technical performance, economics is also an important weight on the decision-making scale.

Initial cost

The initial cost of anti-fog coated glass is relatively low. The coating process is relatively simple and can be completed by adding an additional surface treatment step to ordinary glass. For budget-conscious freezer products targeting the mid- to low-end market, anti-fog coatings are an easy entry point.

The initial cost of ITO electric heated glass is considerably higher. The coating process requires specialized vacuum coating equipment, and the printing and welding of silver paste busbars require precise control. The packaging process for insulating glass is also more complex than that of ordinary insulating glass. In addition, a matching power control system (transformer, thermostat, or smart controller) is required. Comprehensive calculations show that the cost per ITO electric heated glass door may be 1.5 to 2.5 times that of anti-fog coated glass doors, with the exact multiplier depending on glass size, configuration requirements, and order quantity.

Operating energy consumption

Anti-fog coated glass itself does not consume electricity, which is its significant advantage. However, as mentioned earlier, coatings cannot solve frost problems; refrigerator evaporators still require regular electric defrosting, which is a significant energy consumption.

ITO electric heated glass requires continuous power supply. For example, a vertical freezer glass door measuring 600 millimeters × 1800 millimeters uses ITO glass with a power density of 2 watts per square decimeter, resulting in a total power of about 21.6 watts. If power is supplied continuously for 24 hours, the daily electricity consumption is about 0.52 kWh. Based on industrial electricity rates, the monthly electricity cost ranges from approximately 15 to 30 RMB (depending on local rates). This number may seem small, but for a supermarket refrigerated cabinet group with 50 doors, the monthly electricity bill can reach 750 to 1,500 yuan.

However, one key perspective is often overlooked: ITO glass ensures that products are always clearly visible, reducing customers' repeated door openings to see the product. A British refrigeration research institute once observed and analyzed supermarket consumer behavior and found that when the glass door of the freezer is clear and transparent, customers only open the door once every 3 to 4 glances; When glass doors fog up, the frequency of opening nearly doubles. Every unnecessary opening means a large amount of cold air is lost inside the freezer, forcing the compressor to speed up to restore the set temperature. Research shows that in high-traffic supermarket environments, freezers equipped with ITO electrically heated glass doors actually consume about 8% to 12% less compressor energy than those with regular glass doors or anti-fog coated glass doors. The electricity savings from this portion are often enough to cover the initial cost increment of ITO glass over the years of the freezer's service life.

4. Service Life and Maintenance: Considerations from a time perspective

ITO electric heated glass

Because the ITO coating is enclosed inside the insulating glass, it is completely isolated from contact with external air, moisture, and contaminants, with a theoretical service life of over 10 years. The key factors affecting its lifespan are not the film layer itself, but the quality of welding between the busbar and the wires, the reliability of the power control system, and the durability of the insulated glass seal. As long as the craftsmanship quality in these steps is excellent, ITO electric heating glass requires almost no maintenance throughout the refrigerator's entire service life.

Anti-fog coated glass

Anti-fog coatings are exposed directly to air and must withstand mechanical friction from cleaning, chemical corrosion from condensate, and aging from ultraviolet exposure. Some low-end anti-fog coatings on the market start to lose effectiveness after about a year of use, requiring recoating or glass replacement. Even high-quality coatings usually require maintenance after 3 to 5 years. For end users, this means additional maintenance costs and equipment downtime.

5. Suggested Applicable Scenarios: There is no best solution, only the most suitable one

Based on the above multi-dimensional analysis, we can offer the following selection recommendations for different application scenarios:

Recommended scenarios for using ITO electric heated glass:

Low-temperature freezers (minus 18°C and below) require rigid anti-fog and frost resistance

Freezers installed in high-temperature and high-humidity environments (tropical regions, outdoors, or semi-outdoor environments)

High-end supermarkets, boutique convenience stores, and other scenarios with extremely high product display requirements

Commercial freezers with frequent doors need to quickly restore glass clarity

For large chain supermarkets, overall energy consumption and brand image are long-term considerations

Recommended scenarios for using anti-fog coated glass:

Regions with relatively mild temperature and humidity (temperate, dry climate)

Medium and low temperature refrigerated cabinets (0 to 5 degrees Celsius) have lower condensation pressure

Entry-level products highly sensitive to initial cost

Storage freezers with low door opening frequency (such as kitchen cold storage doors)

For small independent stores, wiring costs for a single electric heating device are not cost-effective
